Sugar-Free Electrolytes: What It Means and Why It Matters

A lot of electrolyte and sports drinks lean on sugar for flavor. Here's what "sugar-free" actually means on a label, why it's worth paying attention to, and how HYDRATE! is formulated.

What "sugar-free" means

Under FDA labeling rules, "sugar-free" means less than 0.5g of sugar per serving — effectively zero. It doesn't mean calorie-free or carbohydrate-free; a sugar-free product can still contain a small number of calories or carbs from other ingredients.

Why it matters

Many electrolyte and sports drink powders add 4–8g or more of sugar per serving to improve taste. That adds up fast if you're drinking one multiple times a day, and it works against goals like managing blood sugar, reducing added sugar intake, or staying in ketosis. A sugar-free formula lets you get electrolyte support without the extra sugar load.

What it doesn't mean

Sugar-free doesn't automatically mean "no sweetener" — most sugar-free electrolyte powders, including HYDRATE!, use a non-sugar sweetener (in our case, sucralose) to stay palatable. It also doesn't mean the product has zero calories or zero carbohydrates; always check the actual Supplement Facts panel rather than assuming based on the word "sugar-free" alone.

How this relates to HYDRATE!

Every serving of HYDRATE!™ has 0g of sugar and just 10 calories, with 2g of total carbohydrates — sweetened with sucralose instead of sugar. That makes it keto-friendly as well as sugar-free. You can see the full Supplement Facts panel, including sweetener and other ingredients, on each flavor's product page.
