Electrolytes, Explained
"Electrolytes" gets used a lot in hydration marketing, but the actual science behind it is simple. Here's what electrolytes are, why your body needs them, and what the term does and doesn't mean.
What electrolytes actually are
Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electric charge when dissolved in fluid — in the human body, the main ones are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. That electric charge is what lets your nerves send signals, your muscles contract (including your heart), and your body keep fluid balanced between your cells and bloodstream.
Why they matter for hydration
Water alone doesn't rehydrate you as effectively as water plus electrolytes, especially after sweating, a long flight, illness, or a hot day. Sweat isn't just water — it carries sodium and potassium out with it. Replacing fluid without replacing those minerals can leave you drinking plenty of water and still feeling off: tired, foggy, headachy, or crampy. That's the "hydration gap" an electrolyte powder is designed to close.
What "electrolytes" doesn't mean
Electrolytes aren't a stimulant, a weight-loss ingredient, or a cure for dehydration-related medical conditions. They're minerals your body already uses every day — supplementing them supports normal hydration and muscle/nerve function, but it isn't a substitute for medical care if you have a diagnosed condition involving fluid or electrolyte balance (such as kidney disease). If you're unsure, check with a healthcare provider.
